This web site is an excellent one and is free. As far as a specific site that has to do with your Swiss roots, I would start with this site.
On the American side try the Morman site,or go to the LDS church. Latter Day Saints. They were the keepers of alot of records,and they have access that you can use on the web. Check for days and times it's opened to the public. Here in Ohio it's a dime per copy of anything you print out. Ancestry.com lets you post questions on their site for free.
