Replacing an existing pocket door

I've seen lots of advice on how to install a pocket door but no info on how to replace one. I have a pocket door that is working just fine, however I want to replace it so that the door style will match my other new interior doors. I switched from a plain door to a two-panel door and would like to do the same for the pocket door. I read somewhere that "almost any door" can be used as a pocket door. So what exactly does that mean? Can I simply buy a door of my choosing and transfer the hardware from the old door to the new one? Thanks for your help

Yes, a pocket door is more about the hardware and the slot in the wall than it is about the door. As long as you choose a door that isn't terribly heavy or too thick (or large) to fit, any door should work.

Choose the two panel door that is as near the dimensions of the slab door you currently have installed (probably a hollow core mahogany veneer slab). I say choose one of similar dimensions because the newer doors leave very little "wiggle room" for trimming length and width. Having said that, even if you have to cut 1-1/2 inches into the height of the door and you cut away the perimeter wood, you can trim it up, glue and re-insert it to provide that much needed support.
