Repairing lacquer kitchen cabinets

My new lacquer- painted kitchen cabinets started cracking at the seams within two or three months of installation.  A bit later, the paint also began peeling and lifting in a few places, showing the bare wood.  The chip revealed a white primer stuck to the yellow top coat.  My contractor says he will come in and respray  the entire kitchen, but I have lost confidence in him as he could not satisfactorily explain why the problems in the first place.  He said that wood moves and that some moisture had caused the other problems.  I am a senior and have been very careful with the cabinets.   I am not a perfectionist.  Could the problem areas be repaired without painting the  entire kitchen?  Thank you, Margaret

I have exactly the same problem. Our kitchen was rebuilt after a house fire, and after a few weeks the lacquer started chipping and lifting. I have no idea how to fix it, and certainly don't want to call the crook who did the work for Farmer's Insurance.  I will look forward to any answer you get.

I worked refinishing furniture with lacquer for 15 years. If there is a white film in the lacquer, that is called "blushing", that is caused from too much moisture being in the air when the lacquer was applied. That will cause the lacquer to flake and chip off. Wood does expand and contract with humidy and heat, when it does it may leave small cracks in the finish. Also if the wood was contaminated that will cause the finish to chip and flake off. The best solution is to have them stipped and refinished, just recoating them will not stop the original finish from lifting off the wood.

13 thumbs up

It aint worth eating if it dont bite you back

With the environmental restrictions imposed on manufacturers of things like stains and laquers now I have found very few stains that I would use again. Most of what is available now is water based and water and wood do not work well with each other. I too have had cabinets lose the stain in the same way and sympathise with you, as well as your cab. contractor. I ended up building my own cabs and stained them in the evil old oil based stains and have had no trouble since. Show some mercy to your contractor and he will be more likely to work with you.
