Repairing Wood Trim thats Fuzzy and Gummie

I'm repairing wood trim that someone else tried to strip. They used both water based and solvent based applications. Now the old finish is "dimpled" and the exposed wood looks "fuzzy". Some of the old finish has has something applied to it but not cleaned off and has turned really dark and it gummie. How do I fix this? I don't want to replace it. The wood under all this is good I believe.

Scrape the surface until it is no longer gummy, then sand.

When I scrape it, it gets fuzzier and splinters out REALLY BAD!

Okay, use sand paper or a sanding sponge with a very large grit to get past the gummy stuff.  It will clog the paper quickly requiring cleaning or fresh paper changes, which is why I said to scrape.  When you get the gunk off, use a finer grade of paper.

Or, use a drawknife or other blade, pulling it towards you.  That shouldn't splinter, but be very careful you don't cut yourself.
