Even though Buddhism is often times defined as a religion or philosophy, the reality is that Buddhism emphasizes teachings to guide one to directly experiencing reality. For this reason, I think the first essential of Buddhism is religious tolerance because when things come down to the basic principles, almost all of conflict in the world is based on some sort of disagreement about religions. We are only able to really experience the world when we put aside our differences and learn to live side by side.
