Refrigerator Shut Off

My refrigerator shut off for several hours. Is the food still safe to use?

When the power goes out or when your refrigerator quits working, avoid opening the door of the refrigerator. This will keep as much cold air in as possible. If the refrigerator is off for 8 hours or more, it will probably be necessary to throw out most of the food. Most produce will probably be ok. If the refrigerator is off less than 8 hours, check to see if the food still feels cold. If it does, then it is most likely ok. If the food feels warm to the touch, throw it out. Chilled foods must be at 40°F or below to be safe. We like to go by the old saying "when in doubt, throw it out".

If the door remained closed and it still feels quite cool inside, then it should all be fine.  The only food that you have to be really careful with is raw meat.  Everything else can last a good few hours nor refrigerated.
