Refinishing a wood table with inlaid top

I want to refinish a wood side table. The top is inlaid and the wood grain is going in different directions from one piece to the next. How would I go about sanding the finish off? Is there no way around sanding against the grain because of this? What will it do to the wood if it isn't all sanded with the grain?

Do not sand the finish off... Remove it with paint remover. then you can sand the top with 220 sanf paper
