The tallest man ever recorded was Robert Pershing Wadlow (of Alton, Illinois, USA) who was 2.72 meters high.... He passed at 1940. 
The tallest living person today is Leonid Stadnyk, Ukraine, with a height of "only" 2.57 meters.
