Recommended amps?

I quit playing guitar ten years ago and now I want to go back to it. I have an old 15W Peavey amp, it's not working well  and I want to upgrade it. Ten years ago marshall amps where considered at the top. Are there any new recommended players in the amplifier market?

I'm not sure about new models, but I've been using a Roland Jazz Chorus 120 (Roland JC-120) amp for years and it rocks! It has the best clean sound out there. If you want distortion, however, you'll need a separate effects pedal since the JC-120's distortion is weak.

The good thing is that with such a great pure clean sound it's easy to add effects to it and get the sound you are looking for.

It's a matter of taste... Most amps got a sound that they known for.

My best advice for you us go out and listen to different amps.

I've got a Peavey (scorpion) and i like it (it's got a nice sounding built in distortion)

I used to have a Fender amp (15 watt, don't remember the model) that had a GREAT clean sound...

If you wanna go for an all-in-one moddeling-amp

I strongly recommend the Vox Ad-VT series, my brother owns one, and, my god, it really rocks!  The models all sound superb ( and recognize nuances in your playing, which can't be said of a loth of moddellers) plus, its a half-valve-amp, which makes it sound even better.  Gotta check them out for sure, the prize is really ok to!

Ofcoarse, marshall still makes topclass-amps, but by explaining that I would only repeat what Rattlehead said.

There are also a lot of great boutique players in the marketplace now...I like Victoria Amps a lot, and Budda, and the small Vox amps do rock.  I think you need to think about several things: 1) will you be moving the amp a lot (e.g., playing gigs) or will you leave it in one place? (A Marshall stack is not easy to cart around) 2) what sounds and features do you want (tremolo, clean/overdrive channel, master/slave out (if you want to use a second amp), amp modeling sounds, etc).  3) how much volume do you want? (I'm a big fan of using very small amps that can be miked through the house sound system if you need to - the smaller amps saturate more easily, making it easier to get the sound you want without blowing out your ears) 4) how much money do you want to spend?
