"book smart and family stupid?"  THIS PHRASE IS BETTER KNOWN AS PEOPLE VIEW BOOK SMART AS EDUCATED BUT NO  COMMON SENSE.

The person would be knowledgeable on an academic level but can't use that knowledge to be a family person.  A divorced marriage counselor comes to mind.

"The butterfly counts not the months, but the moments, and has time enough." ~ Rabindranath Tagore

to the best of my understanding, the statement "book smart andfamiy stupid" means that the individual has a wealth of knowledge aquired through study an learning, but has very little undrstanding of the time and dedication, the thought and effort, the patience and heartache that goes into being a "family man". it means while they understand the literature of what a family is, they do not understand for one reason or another, what makes a family work.
