Radio Technologies

I accidentally came up against your blog and found it quite interesting. I'm not an expert on radio technologies, and so, I could not understand what's the rush on moving towards either DAB or DRM technologies as long as sound quality which they offer, is worse than the nowadays FM broadcast?

RE: Radio Technologies

According to Wikipedia, The original objectives of converting to digital transmission were to enable higher fidelity, more stations and more resistance to noise, but actually most of stereo stations on DAB sound worse than FM. So, now the DAB system is in the process of being upgraded, and it will adopt the AAC+ audio codec to improve the efficiency of the system.

The Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM), says Wikipedia, "is a set of digital audio broadcasting technologies designed to work over the bands currently used for AM broadcast, particularly shortwave. DRM can fit more channels than AM, at higher quality, into a given amount of bandwidth, using various MPEG-4 codecs".

RE: Radio Technologies

Hi,

In a nutshell, DAB offers not only better sound quality, but also the possibility of squeezing more stations into less spectrum. The problem is that there is a trade-off between the two: the more stations you want, the more that will impact on sound quality. With speech radio it's less of an issue and most people seem to be quite happy with what they are hearing, although a few listeners with "golden ears" have complained. They tend to be classical music buffs and a lot fussier than most.
