Maybe start him off with a few board games and move on to Munchkin. Start him on real RPGs when he's about 12. Until then he will probably have trouble with the rules, maths and when his character dies.

7 is a bit early for "real" RPG.

i personally started at about 9-10.

i believe it would be more conducive if you start with simple board games, working your way up.

maybe a few of Steve Jackson's adventure books?

amazon link just pick anything there.

it worked wonders for my imagination.

later, you can actually DM for him and his ffriends.

when you do that ease up on the rules and math, focousing mainly on the characters and roleplaying.

that would teach them nice good values.

when he is older, and better at math, let him run his own course.

The answer is "it depends on the child."

My name is Sam Chupp and I am a kids' RPG advocate. I have a mailing list called kids-rpg on Yahoo Groups where we talk about just such issues. There are some resources I'd like to point you to:

http://dragonkin.bearsgrove.com is my podcast - of interest is Episode 2 where you can hear an interview with two younger girls, both of whom started roleplaying before they were 7.

In addition, there is a really nice website called "The Young Person's Adventure League" and it has a lot more information for you.

http://www.theescapist.com/ypal/

 and the email list is

 kids-rpg@yahoogroups.com

I hope that these resources can help you. If I can be of help in any other way, please don't hesitate to ask.
