RAD in a toddler

My 2 year old son has had frequent difficulty breathing when he has had colds.  He experienced chest retractions and below average oxygen levels.  He was seen at the ER 3 times and given a nebulizer and steriod.  When he was discharged they gave him the diagnosis of Reactive Airway Disease (RAD).  After the 3rd time I requested to see a specialist.  In the meantime he has been taking Singular on a daily basis.  What should I expect to happen when he visits the specialist?  Is he going to have to take medicine forever?  Will he have asthma??
