Quinoa and dieting

The latest culinary fashion is eating Quinoa.

Can anyone tell me - which is better for dieting  (less calories) Quinoa, rice or potatoes?

Thanks

The quinoa is treated much like a rice, in its preparation.  One big difference between potato and rice vs. quinoa- the quinoa has a useful  percentage of protein.  Another important item is it's gluton free and provides many uses from cereal to flour.

As far as calories are concerned there is no significant difference between rice, quinoa and potatoes, in fact quinoa might have the highest amount of calories out of the three. However because it is gluton free, quinoa is much easier to digest than the other two and it supplies you with a large portion of your recommended protein intake.

Quinoa is preferable to rice and potatoes as it has a lower glycemic index. This will mean that it will release it's energy slowly which won't give you a big spike in energy followed by a big drop which makes you hungry and want to eat more. So the main benefit is controlling your hunger but your pancreas with also benefit as it won't have to make sudden big releases of insulin. The reason quinoa has a low glycemic index is because of it's protein and fiber content.

The point is you can eat less calories whilst still feeling full, but if you eat too many calories how healthy the food is becomes irrelevant. See: Where to buy quinoa
