Quality of photos from digital cameras

What do photography experts think of images from digital cameras, compared to photographs from traditional cameras?  Do professional or other experienced photographers feel that digital images cannot match the quality of images on conventional film?  (Any personal anecdotes -- as well as any statements by photographers -- would be welcome.)

For all amature photographers, digital is probably better, because modern compact digital cameras make the best out of every situation, the cameras are affordable, running costs (taking photos and "developing") are much cheaper than film and you can easily and effortlessly upload, email and share photos. built-in video is a great bonus.

For professionals it is depended on the use and the target media and print size ( web, magazine, outdoor billboard, etc.)

Most news and sports photographers have already switched to digital, because of the need to provide images as fast as possible.

Professional photographers who strive for the best quality use medium, or better, large-format cameras.
These can be used with either film or digital backs that currently reach 39 Mega pixel.

Some say that film has a better color-accuracy, and, more importantly, that black and white prints produced from film have a different quality than prints produced from digital capture.

Some photographers reject the immediacy of digital and prefer the traditional, all-manual approach, and the contemplative process.

Last but not least,  I think that it is all a matter of personal choice;
Use whatever tool you feel comfortable with, be it a camera phone, an instant film camera, a large-format camera or a medium-format digital camera

Happy shooting !

If the resolution of the digital photos is sufficient there is hardly any visual difference from the filmed product. The big advantage of the digital photo is that it can be copied, enlarged, cropped and retouched via the computer without the need of the darkroom. Images can be sent via e-mail to any finisher for prints. There is no need for storing prints or images since everything is digitized. New prints are easy to order and no deterioration during storage. Remeber yellowed prints and faded color prints? No more.
