Putting thousands of pictures into folders that are in different spots

Putting pictures into folders.

I have thousands of pictures by date only in several different places, i.e.  "my pictures" on the computer, Photoshop 3.2, Photoshop 5, Photoshop 6.  How do I bring them all together and put in folders and then put on an external hard drive?  thank you.

The key to organizing digital pictures is to have them in aptly named folders and subfolders. What to name the folders can be challenging. Start with broad categories like Vacation, Holiday, Indoors, and Outdoors. You can also create a folder for those pictures family and friends share with you; that folder could have a name like “Sent to me.” Create folders with these names, placing the folders in a location of your choice such as in the “My Pictures” directory.

  • Step 2
Within each of the newly created folders, create sub-folders. Here are some ideas on how you can do that.

VACATION suggestions for sub-folders: Hawaii March 2009, Williamsburg June 2008, Camping July 2007, Williamsburg August 2006, Ski Weekend, etc.

HOLIDAY suggestions for sub-folders: Christmas, Father’s Day, July 4, etc. You can place all Christmas (Father’s Day, July 4, etc) pictures into their respective folders where you can sort them by date, or you can create additional sub-folders. For instance, under the Christmas folder, you could have additional folders by date or you can create folders to show the location at which the Christmas pictures were taken, e.g., Tuscan Parade, Grandma’s House, Outdoor Decorations, etc.

INDOORS suggestions for sub-folders: Birthday Parties, Pets, Kids, School Events, Family, etc.

OUTDOORS suggestions for sub-folders: Garden, Winter, Sports, etc.

SENT TO ME can have sub-folders by year, e.g., 2010, 2009, etc., or could be the name of the sender.

  • Step 3
You may use software designed to move pictures from your digital camera to your computer, or you may manually use Windows Explorer to grab pictures from your digital camera. Whichever method you use, from Windows Explore (or your camera software program) you can then drag the new pictures to their respective folder. You should be able to locate pictures more readily when they are categorized.
