how do you break a puppy of excessive licking your face [puppy kisses so to speak] and biting your hands? She was a pound puppy [some type of terrier, small and very young.]

Linda Taylor, Your dog sounds just like my Sparky! We got him from a shelter when he was one year old. He has been licking our faces like crazy since day one. He is a terrier mix. I read that is how they show their love for you. He still licks like crazy today. Just be glad he is happy and loves you. Let him lick away. I don't know if you can ever get him to stop it or not. Now I don't ever want him to stop.

Linda,
The dog shows affection by kissing the owner's face. It's just normal. Biting should be discouraged even if she is just playful. When the dog bites, you should tap the mouth and sternly tell her NO! Dogs love to please their owners. If she sees that you mean what you say, she will eventually stop biting.
