My Privacy RIGHT or mental health worker allowed to access this info????

If you are receiving mental health treatment due to depression regarding chronic fatigue can a mental health treater (not a doctor) request to speak to your other doctor?

I am receiving soley mental treatment from her. I beleive it is my private business and my right to keep the two seperate from each other. If I dont want her to speak to the doctor treating me for a medical condition isnt that my right? I'm tired of these weirdo mental health workers trying to get you to sell your soul to them hence compromise your dignity and privacy. I don't know if she is trying to check my naivity in this plight. I am not familiar with privacy rights in a situation like this....

What would you do?

No. One cannot contact the other without your permission.

Usually mental health workers like to be in touch with your doctor just to be on the safe side when treating you for mental health issues.  Your doctor ought to know that you are seeing a mental health professional.  Usually, mental and physical go together.  Try to be more open minded and less defensive.  A mental health professional has the right to contact your doctor in case of emergencies that she or he cannot handle.  It is usually a team approach.

Both answers provided are right.  You have the authority to decide if you want any of your medical information shared between your mental health and primary care providers.  As your mental health provider is not a psychiatrist, then it does make sense to work with your doctor as he or she is the only one who can prescribe any medications or handle your care should an emergency or hospitalization arise. Also, as your depression is the result of chronic fatigue syndrome--which is organic/physical--and talk or whatever therapy you are doing now doesn't work, your doctor may need to get involved to order tests, meds, etc.  But at the end of the day, it is your call.

It usually helps in giving proper health care if one doctor is aware of the other's treatment. But that can only be done with your permission and not without it.

Hi, all mental health providers are bound by law to keep all of your information confidential unless you sign a paper that they can share the information with someone else.  You need to contact the National Association of Mental Illness (NAMI) either in your area if their is a listing or the toll free national one and report this to them because it is against the law in this country to develve information on a patient unless they ask you first and you sign a form saying it's ok.

Hope that helps. Kathy

Changing others begins by changing yourself first

There is a data base upon which many professionals in the field of mental health post their findings, and it will be accessible to others who are inquiring. Therefore you probably ask your provider if they post. Some of them will not ask you but their small print will stipulate that they can do so if you sign to OK it. Therefore you have to be very clear if you do not want it to occurr. If they insist then you should take your leave and seek another professional that abides by your wishes

What they are really trying to do with rate on your. Any social worker is not someone you should trust as they get paid to screw you and your family over.

no its not  they have to communicate to  make sure they  give you the right treatment. If your on meds for one thing  they need to make sure  meds do not interact
