Jail is "lighter duty" while prison is the "real thing". You get caught for [misdemeanor] petty theft, for example.. catch a 3-6 month sentence.. you'll serve that time in county jail. Any felony, or sentence over one year [generally], and you'll spend time in county jail initially, until you are transferred to either a state or federal prison -- depending on the crime -- where you will formally serve out your sentence....
