Printing films and digital images

I had seen in photo labs that the machine that prints the digital photos and the one that prints from films is the same one.

what process do the two medias share?

are films are getting scanned and then printed or do the digital images go through any chemical process?

The films are first being scanned and then printed. That's how you get an 15X10 Index and a photo CD.

almost all processing now is digital. This doesnt mean that they are using Inkjet printers but that the photographic paper is exposed to light by rapidly moving LED's or lasers and then processed with RA-4 chemistry in the tradition manner. What you recieve is a real photograph but it went through a "digital intermediate" stage..
