Preventable death?

11-year-old Madeline Neumann died today from diabetic ketoacidosis, a condition that left too little insulin in her body. Her parents never took her to the doctor but instead chose to pray for her.

She had probably been ill for about a month, suffering symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness.

The girl's mother, Leilani Neumann, said the family believes in the Bible and that healing comes from God, but she said they do not belong to an organized religion or faith, are not fanatics and have nothing against doctors.

Is this child abuse? Can parents choose to not give their children medical treatment? (Keep in mind this was a preventable death). Did her parents kill her?

To say nothing, especially when speaking, is half the art of diplomacy.

This question is a very personal one for me since I have Type 1 diabetes (the same as Madeline). I belong to many diabetes forums, blogs, etc. and this is the hottest topic that we are all discussing. No matter if a person is religious or not, there was no excuse for Madeline to have died. Child abuse? You better believe it! I can only hope something positive comes out of this where a situation like this

NEVER happens again.
