Usually you can see the heartbeat in an ultrasound when your period is 2 to 2-1/2 weeks late (i.e., during the 6th week) The 5th week can frequently be too early to see anything but a sac.

It is possible to detect the fetal heart beat at 05 wks by transabdominal scan and at about 04 wks by transvaginal ultrasound scan. Both the techniques can be augmented by using the color/power doppler mode.
Just to clarify, we're saying the same thing, just that I was referring to weeks from the LMP & what majorrk is referring to is from conception.

The heartbeat can be seen on the ultrasound this early, not always though. A fetal heartbeat usually can't be heard til about 10 weeks.
