It seems to me Catholics have always considered other Christians as some sort of "lesser" believers, and they hardly needed the Pope to tell them they were right.

I find the Pope's behaviour surprising. In this day and age, where more than anything else we really want for unity and fraternity, to divide Christians from their fellow Christians is an action I cannot understand

The Pope would never claim that you were not a Christian. There is one True Church but Outsid of its walls many are spiritualy unite with God and the Church. There is batism by water, by blood, and by desire.

I was raised Catholic. Of course, I am now an atheist. Six percent of clergy have been removed for pedophilia while another four to six percent are estimated among Catholic clergy. Many more are homosexual and many have failed to form appropriate heterosexual feelings for the opposite sex. The Church continues to attack science and scientists, to limit advancement of nuns, to oppose embryonic stem cell research that is intended to find cures, and to deny a woman the right to control her rate of reproduction and readiness to raise a child.

Dawn--I was raised Catholic. Of course I am now an Atheist. Catholics and other Christians constitute 15% of the population of 6.5 billion people on Earth. It does not matter who is praying. There is no one listening. Haven't you praying people discovered that yet. I know I have. Scientific studies demonstrate there is no effect from praying. The Catholic Church has even been discredited by Dan Brown author of the DaVinci Code.    Physicalist

You have to accept that all religions are man-made. If there was a god, he would only establish one religion and we would all worship him. Zeus was man-made; Woden was man-made, Atlas was man-made, Allah and Jesus are man-made. There will be other "true" gods in the future  -  we havn't reached the end of the line. Religion is an effort to explain and to understand the natural world. It never was true - it fulfills a human need to assess, to understand, to put into context.
