I made $61000 this year from my day job and $5800 doing some software development on the side for a dedicated client. I started the venture in March, so it is fairly new. What is the best way for me to file to save from having a hefty tax bill? Can I deduct my home office space? What about a small portion of my cellphone bill?
The thing is, the only high expense I really had was my time. I owned the computer before starting the venture, the domain name was $10 per year, the office space is a 6'x6' space in a 1500sq ft house. The advertising was in the form of a blog and a sample software project that I spent weeks working on. The blog and the sample software are the reasons the client approached me, so without them, I wouldn't have been in business.
Can I deduct my time put into the blog as well as the time spent on the sample project? The blog posts are solely targeted towards an IT/Computer Science audience and the topics are strictly IT related.
Any other suggestions on how to lower by tax burden?
Thanks,
James
