PattyP- how disappointing to read your post that degrades conservative talk show hosts and calls them "dangerous". They have different beliefs than you, but they certainly have the right to speak. I feel that same way about Keith O. and Racheal M. on MSNBC. I think that they are awful, but I certainly think that they should be allowed to speak. I'd place both of them on Keith's "worse person" list. Even though I don't agree with your politics, I thought that you were more reasonable than many of the obnoxious posters on this site.
Hi, Lisa - I'm speaking very truthfully about the conservative talk show hosts. I fear people mix up "entertainment" with the truthful/accurate news reporting. And, for the record, I'm not a fan of either Maddow or Olberman, either. I'm tired of the division all these people seem to thrive on. We've got to remember, the more outrageous they are - the higher their ratings are. They are absolutely not reporting legitimate news - they are panderers to their bases.
I've heard Rush Limbaugh say things that were so beyond the pale, so basically disgusting that I would love to see him thrown off the air. And, these comments didn't have anything to do with Obama or his policies. Have you ever heard Levin speak? He sounds like an out of control lunatic who needs to be put in a hospital. Did you know Michael Savage was denied entrance to England because he was considered "undesirable" because of his "hate talk"? How about Glenn Beck telling people to stockpile weapons? Do you think he is in any way responsible for the woman arrested last week with a loaded assault rifle outside a military base? Her MySpace page was a shrine to Beck and his comments about guns. These people have a RESPONSIBILITY when they infect the public with these dangerous and most often incorrect statements.
We are in a precarious time right now. There are alot of people on the edge. The last thing we need is these millionaire "entertainers" - conservative/liberal - pushing them off.
I understand the defense of "free speech" - except for 'yelling fire in a crowded building' - but guess what? I think I'm starting to smell smoke and all these guys should stop thinking about their paychecks and more about the welfare of the country.
Just my opinion, Lisa.
I think that we have to be very careful when we talk about limiting free speech. I guess that it all depends on your perspective as to how you view certain talk show hosts. Personally, I can't stand Michael Savage, but I hardly think that he should be denied entrance to England. I fully support Levin's views, and I truly believe that Glenn Beck is a very passionate individual who is very afraid that we are losing the core values on which our country was founded. I honestly never heard his comment about stockpiling weapons so I can't speak to that, but no, I don't think that he is in any way responsible for that woman. You are going down a very slippery slope with those type of accusations. It is unfortunate that anyone would get their news information exclusively from talk show hosts, but sadly many people choose to follow the beliefs of movie and television celebrities to form their opinions. How many people supported Obama based on Oprah's recommendation? I am more outraged about people like Al Gore who preach about global warning as he flies around in his private jet. I think that he is more concerned about his legacy than the environment. At least Rush admits to being an entertainer.
