Planting Bamboo

I have a little bamboo straw in a vase (the one they sell in Ikea) and I was wondering: if I'd plant it in my garden would it grow to a high bamboo cane? or is it a different specie of bamboo.

there are some varieties of bamboo the clumping and running. The running types are considered invasive, as they readily spread their roots far and wide so if you don't want that your neighbors be angry at you choose the clumping.
