The most common portrait technic is adjusting the camera in front of the person (make sure that the person sites in a little angle so his sholders wont be parallel to the camera). The first light needs to light the face's side that is far from the camera. The other light should be set in

double the distance from the person then the other light, on the closed side of the face. That way you'll get a 3D feeling of the face and won't have any disfiguration of the face. The big light "masks" are to make the light softer, it lowers the contrast. In classic photography they use to photograph women with softer light and men with the harder one.
