Is Pilates good for weight loss?

Can I lose weight doing Pilates alone? I don't have much time and need something that helps me with flexibility and lengthens and tones my muscles. Is cardio exercise necessary to lose weight?

Work hard or go home.

The short answer is yes; pilates is supportive of weight loss. In many cases just beginning Pilates class, or a home routine, is enough to jump start weight loss. However, as time goes by you may find that your body becomes accustomed to your workout level. Then, the you will need to increase the intensity of your workout enough to help you continue to burn extra calories.

It's your future, be there healthy.

Indeed, in order to lose weight there are two key components: aerobic (fat burning) activity, and reduced caloric intake.  Pilates, as far as my own experience goes and as far as the research goes, is not sufficiently aerobic on its own to allow for weight loss. Pilates, esepcially when done in a studio on the machines, is more similar to Physical Therapy or a toning class.  That being said, the stomach exercises that are done in Pilates are cardio and sweat inducing.

For all ages, it is recommended that a person do at a minimum 3 workouts per week of high cardio intensity, for 30-45 minutes. I would recommend doing Pilates twice a week, with power walking 2-3 more times per week. If you have more time and motivation, you can bike or swim.

In cutting out caloric intake, avoid in particular carbohydrates, and avoid mixing even small carbs with protein. Make sure you drink 10-12 cups of water per day.

Of course you can lose weight with just Pilates, but don't neglect your diet, if you are attempting to lose weight, make sure you are eating a well balanced diet.  Don't go home and eat a basket of fries and a burger.

It doesn't matter what you do for exercise if your diet is not in check, so make sure you take a look at that aspect of your life too!

Pilates is better known for toning muscles than for weight loss per se, as it is not as "aerobic" (in the calorie burning sense, and in the circulation sense).  If you want to lose weight, combine a proper diet, Pilates 2 times per week, and then some high power exercise 2-3 times per week, like biking or treadmill.

what about combining 45 minutes of pilates with 45 minutes of lifting light weights

Yes pilates alone will help but not much with weight loss, you will need something a little more intense and something that increases the heart rate more.
