Photo Enlarger Questions!!!

I am a new photo student who is considering creating my own bw darkroom. Looking online I see a lot of different enlargers on sale:

What makes one larger better than another/ what makes them different/ what do you prefer/ does brand matter for a student just learning the ropes?

Aam,

Hello, as far as enlargers, stability of the enlarger head is more important than anything else. If you get a cheap enlarger and the head is wobbling around, you will never get a sharp print. That said, I wouldn't invest much money in the enlarger since once you learn the basics of enlarging, it's time to switch to Digital!

I will assume that you are shooting 35mm film and a standard lens would be a 50mm or a 75/80mm for the enlarger. The wider the lens(50mm) the larger the print you will be able to make. If you only will be making 8x10's, I would get a good 75mm lens. This will get the head of the enlarger higher off the easel and give you more room for burning/dodging the print.

As far as the enlarger itself a good basic one would be a Besseler. And  the lenses are what you can afford since the lens really controls the quality of the final print. Maybe $50-75 tops for a used lens. Good luck and I hope this answers your question,

new students are black and white only. for that I recommend an Omega B-22, simple, light and easy. if you plan to go on to color than get a bessler. more rebust and color is no problem. mine is an old omega bought from an air force auction. just the thought that it may have been used during the cubian missile crisis. much luck in the optic world.
