"Hello, Newman."

"Hello, Jerry."

Phishing: "Fifth Third Bank," etc.

Among the spam in my email every day, I get messages from "Fifth Third Bank."  Of course, these are just phishing attacks.  (I can be fairly confident of that, since I've never had an account at Fifth Third.)

Two questions:

1) Why do the phishers claim to be from Fifth Third and not some other bank?  (I've noticed some "Bank of America" spam too, but not as much.)

2) Are there other legitimate companies whose identities have been stolen to a similar extent for phishing scams?

Hi Clavin

1) There are certainly a heap more banks that are used as phishing spots. Here in Australia several local banks are regulars, along with eBay and PayPal.

May ISPs can recognise and block such emails and so we at the inbox don't get to see all of the baddies that are actually floating around out there

Of course, eBay and PayPal!  I had forgotten about them.  I suppose that my email provider is doing a good job of blocking those messages.  Maybe they're blocking some of the "banks" as well.

It's nice to know that the ISPs are blocking many phishing attacks.  I wonder if they'll ever be able to block all of them?

Thank you, Gramyre, for your answer.  If you have any more information about phishing, I'd be happy to read it.
