Philanthropy related family travel

Dear Dr. Matt: My husband and kids are making our vacation plans.  Do you know of any fun family activities that also have an element of philanthropy to them?

Philanthropy Project is an exciting nonprofit initiative whose mission is to popularize philanthropy. We are using film, TV, and the Web to inspire and enable every man, woman, and child to be a philanthropist.

There are legions of ordinary "citizen philanthropists" from coast to coast who -- together with America's 72,000 charitable foundations and their millions of good works -- are helping to solve some of our nation's most pressing needs.

You don't need to be rich and famous to make a difference!Go to www.aolnews.com/philanthropy to discover the "color of your philanthropy," then get started: fill a need ... and feel the glow.

Dear Mich:

This is a great idea!  And you are in luck: there are many options for incorporating philanthropy into your summer vacation.  Local churches and groups like Habitat for Humanity and the Sierra Club offer “volunteer vacations” which combine local or international travel with activities designed to help others.

There are a number of websites that organize activities according to how much time is involved, from a few minutes to several weeks or months (e.g., www.charityguide.org ).  So you are sure to find something to match the amount of time you are willing to spend.

Even a few minor activities can increase your wattage on the GlowMeter (see www.aolnews.com/philanthropy) and a volunteer vacation can have a dramatic impact.  You are never too young to reach out to others, so I’m glad to hear that you are including your young children in this family activity.  Keep up the good work!

In my opinion, philanthropy is nicer than kids
