Try shaking table salt on your carpet and leaving it set over-night. This works for "sand" fleas and it's cheap, so worth a try!

If you give your pets garlic, clove garlic in their food it repels fleas and mosquitos, as far as the carpet, unfortunately cigarette ashes work really well. Hope this helps :)

Baking Soda will kill ants.  It is not toxic to pets, so it would be worth a try.  Also Sevin will kill fleas on dogs & carpet.  It is not toxic to people or pets.  The best solution is prevention.  If you keep them off the dog, you will not have a problem.  East to say, hard to do.  Frontline works best of any flea products I have tried.   

I always use Frontline spray to get rid of fleas in my pets, carpets and furniture. It works great.

I would first get rid of the carpet!!!  If you don't want to use a topical flea and tick once a month application, then I would suggest either bathing the animal with pure ivory soap (which will kill the fleas) or put apple cider vinegar in their food, (about a tablespoon a day) which fleas don't like.

about the borax,how long are you talking?like 1 or 2 days or less?  i have 1 cat and 2 dogs,indoors only out to pottyand when they are ready they come back in and are itching. i use frontline but know i need to treat the yard as well. i will try the borax on the carpet .   thank you
