Easy answer, no chemicals. They are bad for yourself, your pets and your home.
CINNAMON!!!
Sprinkle ground cinnamon on your carpets, let it sit for as long as you can before vacuuming. 3 days is the longest I have left it.
Give your dog a bath, Dawn dishsoap works just fine. You do not have to resort to chemical dips or shampoos.
Treat your yard, sprinkle ground cinnamon all over the yard. Re apply after a rain.
Wash all your bedclothes with detergent.
Use cinnamon oil mixed in alcohol (vodka or pure grain alcohol) to spray your furniture, mattress, carpet after vacuuming up the ground cinnamon. Spray your porch and doorway. (cinnamon also keeps bees & wasps away)
This does not kill the fleas, it drives them out.
I did this 2 years ago when my home was so bad the cat would not walk on the floor.
I mixed up cinnamon oil for the woodwork and deck, cinnamon alcohol for the furniture and mattress, carpet, edges of room and gave the cat a bath.
She wears a flea collar now and is fine.
I have not been bit by a flea in 2 years!
Be careful with Borox - your dog can eat it and die! (It does work on fleas - you just have to be very very very very careful how you use it.) I suggest a flea bomb in your house - make sure all people and pets are out of the house - and wash all linens in hot water. Also, frontline plus works best. But do NOT wash your dog within 6 hours of putting the frontline on. Also, don't put the frontline on right after a bath - you have to wait at least 3 hours because flea medicine sticks to the oils on your dogs' body. Dawn dish-soap is best to wash your dog, but it is only a temporary fix. They will come back if you dont use frontline plus or advantix. (Flea collars are known to not work well).
we got a flea infestation once, and we did all the above and they are all gone! And my pups get frontline plus and they are flea free, too! :)
Baking Soda. I use baking soda on my carpets. It is a drying agent and when the flies get is on them it dries them out. same with the eggs. If you have a really bad problem put it on your carpet at night and them vacuum it up in the morning . Do this every other day a few times and your problem will be gone. Plus it is not harful to your pet if they get into it.
It may sound silly, but it actually works very well! put soapy water in a container about the size of a little foot tub and shine a small light directly into the water, when you retire for the night. The fleas try to jump for the light, fall into the soapy water and drown. It may take 2 or 3 times, or until you're satisfied that they're gone. Linda

It does seem silly. You'd have to do that in every room for days on end because they nest and multiply rapidly.
You'd also have to make sure your pet doesn't try to drink it.
Because of the high risk to health problems, professional products are the safest and effective way of protecting your home and pet.
hello YP1801. I had a big problem with those pesky ole' fleas ONCE. I know the flea stuff from the vets is expensive but it was worth every penny. It killed what was on the carpet and what was on the pets. if you don't want to ever have this problem or any other bug disaster, at Lowe's or Wall-Mart, or just about any hardware store they have this pellet stuff you sprinkle in and around your house.Kills fleas, ticks, ants, you name it. I have been doing this for 5 years. If your yard is fenced after the first year you can skip the flea collars and drops altogether. you just put it out before it rains. Good Luck!
Get a rug doctor and scrub your rugs mix white vinegar in shampoo mixture and it will kill the fleas and suck up the eggs also wash your pet in the same mixture of reg shampoo and vinegar and then put a few drops of lavender oil on carpet. or put lavender oil in rug doctor mix instead of vinegar. you may have to do this a couple of times before all fleas/ticks are gone.
I have probably been there, done it, seen it, ate it, felt it, overcame it, smelled it, known about it, met it, shook hands with it, lived with it, wrote about it, many yrs, and still survived to talk about it with you.
I have two possible cures; shake borax over the carpet and wait about 3 hours, then vacuum. You can buy borax in your laundry detergent section of your store. Next: I buy cat flea collars in the roll in the pet department, then cut them up into little pieces and place them around the floor overnight. Do not try this if you have a baby or crawling person who might try to eat them. I put them out at night, then wait. You'll be happy.
