Pet travel

Do you often travel with your pet or do you leave him/her at home?

It depends.  If flying, I personally will not send any pet in cargo.  I have read reports of too many sad stories.  If you have a small pet, some airlines will allow one small pet per flight for a fee with restrictions on the type of carrier that must fit under the seat.  If you must send a larger pet you should NEVER ship when it is real hot or cold.  They could be on the tarmac and/or in the hold of the plane for quite some time before and after the flight, although the airlines say they are the last on and first off.  You would probably get your best information from breeders and/or people who show dogs.  They most often have to use the airlines and could give you the best advice.

If driving, there are a number of hotels and motels that are dog friendly.  You can google "dog friendly motels" and obtain lots of information.  You usually have to pay a small fee and there may be a size restriction.  Our biggest problem is that many say you cannot leave the pet in the room unattended.  That makes it difficult to go out to eat unless the dog can be left in the car (too hot? or safe?).  We have crated our dog and gone out for a short time and gotten by with it.  We use the crate so that if any motel staff have reason to enter the room they will not be startled and they will be assured that the dog will not be able to do any damage.  I believe their other concern is that the dogs don't bark and disturb others while you are out which is most reasonable.

It really depends on the size of the dog,i have 3 dogs,2 big one's and one small. We always take our little dog, because he is small and dos'ent take up much room in the car.unfortantly im not to sure about flying with animals, but i know that if you take your animal you have to worry about walking, feeding, and what not,it is sometimes easier to leave them with a friend that can watch them for you,are you came take him/her to the kennel.I hope i helped a little!Happy traveling!Smile

I rarely leave home without my dogs, certainly not for a vacation or an over night trip. I have two large dogs and they are a part of my family. It is rare that they go with me on a quick trip to the store though. I rarely use planes but my dogs come with me on the ferries. They are not allowed inside but they stay on deck and get petted by passer-bys. The cats rarely come on a trip with me. They stay at home always.

I have a mini maltese. she goes everywhere with me either in a pet stroller or carrier bag and she loves it.  We travel by car to our 2nd home and that trip is anywhere frm 6-9 hrs depending on traffic.  I purchased a pet car seat that straps onto the console where she can sit and watch out the window or curl up and sleep. She loves the independence.  Just make sure that you stop every 3-4 hrs and have water and treats for the trip.  Happy Traveling !

I prefer to leave my yorkie at home. It's better than having him in all those strange places.

I would love to take my Maltese with me when I fly.  I have done this with a pet carrier but at a cost of $75/way and a lay over it just isn't possible to this.  I've found a great place, through a friend, to leave him and we are both happy.

I bring my pets with me when I go out of town, but when I go overseas, that's the time I leave them at home.

I have a petsitter - pets are left at home.
