Hi,
Very simple: They take only the cases that they believe they have good chances to win, and take a nice share (percentage) if they win so they can efford not to earn money from the few cases they loose.

No one if they lose.  They are taking a risk on their judgement about the success of any individual case.  These lawyers usually don't take losing cases, or frivilous lawsuits.

Of course, when they win a case, they get up to 33% of the judgement.
