Pedestal sink drain installation.

I am introducing a pedestal sink into a small bathroom that previously had only a shower and toilet, and need to install a drain and water pipes through the floor or in the wall next to the shower.

Is it appropriate to run the sink drain into the shower drain outlet through a coupling in the shower drain pipe (PVC)? The two drains would be about five feet away from each other.

In my question, I should explain my concern that coupling the sink drain into the shower drain would not properly vent the sink drain. However, my own thinking is that, if you couple the sink drain pipe into the shower drain pipe above the p-trap, it will have the same effect as running the shower, and thus, the sink drain will be adequately vented.

Thanks for any feedback. Joe

A local builder looked my bathroom and confirmed that my thinking in this situation was correct. The shower drain is vented. Therefore, coupling the sink drain pipe to the bottom of the shower drain pipe, above the shower drain p-trap, would take care of any venting needed by the sink drain. Actually, the shower drain itself would prevent any siphonation of water in the sink drain. The sink drain could also make use of either a p-trap (drain in wall) or an s-trap (drain in floor). In this situation, it would not matter what type of trap is used.

Are you going to run a vent line in the wall behind the new sink? If you do, the sink will be properly vented. If all you do is connect the sink p-trap to the shower line without a sink vent, then your sink p-trap will not necessarily work properly. You may hear gurgling or sucking sounds at your sink when you drain a large volume from the sink. Nevertheless, the shower p-trap will keep sewer odor from coming up through the drain, which is one of the main objectives of drain plumbing. FYI, your installation may not be per code but probably will work okay.
