I'm pessimistic that in the long run the Sunni and Shia will be able to form a united nation. Low voter turnout in the provincial elections over the weekend indicates a  disenchantment with what democracy has accomplished.

If you take a look at afghanistan, there hasn't been peace in that country for years, maybe even close to two decades now. Not that the world doesn't want peace for this country,(including the Americans) but the Afghanies happen to be located in a very strategic location. The economic and political needs of the modern world are thought by most to trump the needs of a society/country/culture which we don't understand let alone recognize. Maybe somewhat foolishly, I'm willing to draw a line of similarity between Afghanistan and Iraq. I'd be willing to bet that most capital being spent in these two countries is primarily going towards developing their infrastructure. This will help the world economy. Many of the conflicts that exist in these two countries will decrease, but perhaps they will be far from peace.

To say nothing, especially when speaking, is half the art of diplomacy.

First of all there can no longer be any foreign troops left in Iraq. Then you have to deal with the centuries old problem of the Sunni, Shia, and Kurds. As in so many parts of the world, politics and religion do not mix, and here is no exception. If these groups can not except to at least coexist, there will never be peace. The best thing that could happen to the Kurds is for them to form an independent country, but I don't see this happening. I wish I could be more optimistic.
