Here in the United States each household is considered separate from each other as far as income determination is concerned. If an elderly person needs to go to a nursing home then their own personal resources and assets are taken into consideration to make payment arrangements but the nursing home does not go out and search and track down relatives that are not in the same household to pay for things. I have been told that in Israel it is the opposite and that if the parents have to go into a government run nursing home, the married children who live separately and are raising their own families are sought out and made responsible and forced to pay for the expenses of the parents even in the cases where maybe they are not even on good speaking terms. Is this true ? Michelle Bohbot
