Particulation Filter?

I am interested in buying a diesel car but I have read some bad press about problems with the particulation filters fitted to them. Can someone enlighten me as to these are they the diesel equivelent to a catalytic convertor on a petrol car? And do they fail if you only use your diesel car on short journeys? Any advise would be welcome
