Participating in triathlons

How do I start participating in triathlons? Does having a coach is necessary?

RE: Participating in triathlons

Hi

Short answer: no.

Have you particpated in any mass start events like a charity run 5km or 10km.  Triathlons are different distances, start with the beginner Tris.  and work your way up to Sprint tris and then Olympic tris.  Depending on your conditioning, all this requires is that you slowly increase the intensity and length of your current training sessions.  Once you hit a more competitive level and you feel that your times are not where you want them to be, then a coach consultant may be an option.

I totally agree with "logocentric". Are you running, swimming or cycling now?. I too, believe you should slowly build your skills in these 3 sport subjects. Many pages around the web offer free schedule routines which have different starting points. Find the one who suits you. You may also check if there's a triathlon group training near your residence. That's a very good way to start as well.

Hi,

Totally agree, this is not going to be easy.

I will suggest you join a group in your area as previously suggested and learn more about it.

I have found the following cheap books that you might be interested in:

I hope it helps...GOOD LUCK

Here is a really informative

site that gives online training for a triathlon.  I hope this helps.  I'm sure a coach could always be helpful... just the personal contact and encouragement is always a good thing, however this could be expensive.  Maybe even preparing with a friend could be good enough.

RE: Participating in triathlons

i didn't feel coaching was necessary. however i did think it was important to have a friend train with you. it help me a lot. another think, start with an easy triathalon (sprint distance) so you can build your confidence and really enjoy it before going for a olympic distance, etc.

good luck. it really fun.

RE: Participating in triathlons

I am interested in racing in a event with swimming and cycling. Jogging I have never gotten into due to knee problems. Can I just walk, or speed walk.
