Participating an online AA meeting

Is it possible to participate in an online AA meeting, even if I've never attended a real AA meeting?

RE: Participating an online AA meeting

I think that AA meanings are very open and that attending a meeting is not a prerequisite to participating online.  It's awesome that you're willing to get help, and if you need to attend one personal meeting before hand, I think it's worth it.  Good luck.

I'm guessing yes, but I wouldn't dismiss the importance of off line meetings as well. Part of the AA support group is actually facing and confronting people you can't lie to and can't hide the truth from. Online meeting might be less intense.

Do try to get to an offline meeting at least every once in a while.

RE: Participating an online AA meeting

ANY

AA meeting will gladly accept you in, whether it's on line or in person.  The only stipulation is what they (we) call a closed meeting, which are for people who have admitted to themselves that they have a drinking problem, or think they have a drinking problem.  I don't know, but doubt, that online AA meetings have closed meetings (how could they)?  If you want to, just "lurk" online and see what others are saying and how the meetings are run; then, when you feel comfortable, or have something to contribute, or that sounds familiar, you can jump in with your comments or questions.  Live meetings have their advantages, but you can really be anonymous online.  (No one has to know that you're there.)  In essence, yes; anyone is welcome to come to a meeting at any time.  And, if you're thinking about attending one, you probably should attend one  (or several--don't just try one and think "Oh, this doesn't apply to me.  I can't relate to anything they're saying.")  After awhile, you'l like going to them, and will want to contribute to them yourself.  Remember, anyone is welcome at any time; we never turn anyone away.  (Yes, I'm a member of AA, as if you coudn't already tell.)  But do yourself a favor.  Try it; you'll like it.

Now I Understand… Now I understand why so many celebrities - and regular people - have so much trouble with relapsing when they are supposed to be recovering from either drug or alcohol addiction. Recovery is HARD. HARD. I will never again make fun of anyone struggling with any addiction. Alcoholism is actually a deadly disease and supposedly less than 4% who are afflicted with it recover. I’m determined to be in that 4%! I don’t care what I have to do. (No, I have not relapsed, but had I not had several new
