Painting a varnished surface

I want to paint over varnished wood. Do I have to sand it first or can I just use oil based primer and paint?

He's home!!!! He's home!!! My ds is home!

He is home for 3 weeks! It took him 7 days of traveling via miliary transports, planes, taxis , planes and HE'S HOME!!!! My DS is home for the holidays from Iraq. He has to go back, but for now he your holidays together! Enjoy your time together. That's wonderful news. So happy that he is home safe
