Painting a Guitar

When someone paints a guitar (say like Noel Gallagher's Union Jack guitar), does it harm the sound of the guitar?

I dont know about Noel Gallagher's guitar, but If you paint with proper paints, it definitely won't harm the sound.

Actually, a painted guitar sounds better then unpainted.

Hi there. I started painting guitars a couple of years ago so I'm no gurul. Before and at the time I started I also had a million questions so good luck to you. As far as your question, in most cases of electric guitars painting won't hurt the sound unless you use way to much paint. Remember that the big name manufacturers go out of their way to construct the guitar with woods that more naturally resinate. Sealing and painting them then tends to enrich the depth of your tones.

To much paint typically only hurts a guitars sound because of build up in the wrong places causing it not to go together quite right.

On the other hand, I had a Luthier locally tell me that you need to be really carefull when painting an acoustic or a classic guitar because paint will change your tonal qualities and not necessarily in a good way.

I hope this helps some.

Well first of all an electric guitar body is just that,  a body.   it has nothing to do with the sound.  you can put the neck and pickups on a piece of driftwood and it will sound the same.   Now an acoustic guitar,  that's different, you pretty much have to be an expert,   in other words you can't take a paint brush to it.....good luck

Well, the body has *something* to do with the sound.  Hollow-body guitars and basses certainly sound different than solid-body counterparts.  Also, an instrument with a neck-through design generally has a longer sustain than other designs (e.g., bolt-on neck).
