Paint primers

Question about primer paint

I am renovating my bathroom and going to re-paint it all. The wall was ever painted with several kinds of paint. I just made lots of repairs on it with some peices of new drywalls. A friend suggested me to use a kind of paint called "primer", says it's best for painting after repairing. But he doesn't

know why. I already got a paint test kit from Home Depot to determine if the old paint is Oil/Alkyd or Latex. My questions: Should I use the primer paint?

Do I need to use the test kit to check old paint for buying primer paint?

Can I paint my bathroom window use same primer paint?

All you need to know about paint:

1. The main difference between different brands of paint is the amount

of solids versus liquids in the paint. More solids = more expensive and

better paint. Given how cheap paint is, and how much labor it takes to

apply it, there is absolutely no excuse in buying anything other than

top-quality paint, especially when protecting something as valuable as

your house. Don't buy Glidden or other heavily advertised consumer crap.

Go to a paint store and buy their best line of interior latex. My

current favorite interior paint is Sherwin-Williams ProMar 200, but

Benjamin Moore and others have equivalent paints.

2. You need to prep old paint surfaces if they are at all glossy before

painting so the new paint will stick. This can be done by sanding or

chemically.

3. Unpainted surfaces, like bare wood and drywall, need to be sealed

with primer paint before the finish coat goes on. Again, don't skimp on

quality. Buy the best primer you can find.

Happiness is whereever you let it be!

You can get (at HD) PVA (polyvinyl-acetate) primer paint that's supposed to act as a vapor barrier.  Seems to work.  Anyhow, primer is meant to seal the paper and compound at surface of wall, so finish coat can finish things (figure on two finish coats.) Big problem is keeping things stuck.  Scrape & sand off all loose paint. Sand all the rest. Then any decent paint will stick, and have good chance to stay stuck.  Some cheap-s**t paints come off real easily.  Don't use them, and do remove such. But the surface-roughness from sanding, you want.

Mind you I'm talking 80-120 grit, so the scratches don't show up after painting.
