PC distraction

I am looking for a solution to help me focus on the task at hand while working on my PC.

It often happens that I plan a task to do on the PC and only a minute after I sit in front of the screen I find myself doing something else. It would be either checking my email, downloading music, scanning the PC for viruses, looking for a new version of the software I am using to do the planned task, browsing Yedda :), you name it.

Computers offer incredibly rich medium for procrastination. Once I thought the solution would be to have software which allows only a few, selected programs and disables the access to all other.

While that is technically possible (there is software for that purpose) it is not possible to apply in reality. Not possible, because there is a very strong probability I will need some additional program enabled to do the planned task. (Let's say I've enabled MS Word only; I happen to need to look up a word in a dictionary and the best dictionary I know for that purpose is web based; I need to open a browser and then I have the infinite possibilities to browse sites other than the dictionary.)

After giving up that approach I have not been able to come up with anything else. I would greatly appreciate all useful ideas.

I don't have a full answer for this question, but partial. I'm really looking forward to see more answers.

1. Don't install IM client on your PC. It's a productivity waister.

2. Dedicate 1 hour every day in your schedule for personal work on your PC.

3. Open Outlook only 2 times every day (this advice is by the happiness guru, ben-shachar).

Well the point is that I definitely need IM for work; the problem is that while it does a good job for work it does an even better job for wasting time... Anyway, I need it well enough for serious work so as not to uninstall it.

I wish I checked my email only two times a day, the question is HOW do I achieve that?

703 thumbs up

Procrastination is when you successfully find every excuse not to do the job at hand. There is no tool of which I am aware that will force you to concentrate on your task. You must develop self-discipline which is not easy but you can find a way to do it in a positive manner by giving yourself a compliment each time you prevent procrastination from interfering. You could even go out and buy a present for yourself if you complete the job on time. E-mail can be a time waster. Just as a manager gives himself one hour in the morning to go through his mail you should do the same and not devote any additional time. You will see that most e-mail do not require immediate attention. But again there is no substitute for self-discipline. That's how academics, novelists, etc. get their work done.

8 thumbs up

Repeadidly remind yourself that you have a specific task at hand to do.  Once that task is completed, (for example, homework or research) then, and only then, you can move on to something else, such as playing your favorite computer game.  At first, this will take a lot of self-disapline, but it really works!  It will help you a lot with your time management skills too.  We all can get distracted so easily, but you have to learn to disipline yourself and your mind at the task at hand.  Practice concentrating harder on what you are doing at the moment and don't let yourself get "so distracted" by everything else you see and hear around you - even while working on the computer - Sort of being more "mindful" by trying to stay in the moment.  Pretend that you are in a library in a quiet area, and you have a lot of important reasearch to do and have to take notes, as well.  You certainly wouldn't want everyone bothering you, now would you?  You can always minimize a program and return to it at a later time.  If your tempted to download something, book mark the site or put it into your favorite places and return to it at a more convenient time.  Hope ths helps.
