Oxygen stones - ph, chemistry DIY

How does an Oxygen Stone work? It must be some type of chemical reaction, but how? Is there a DIY to make the stones? And, does it affect the ph levels or build up anything into the water besides what I assume is pure Oxygen?? Or does the chemical reaction in the stone add Oxygen molecules to existing H2O?
