Overcoming prejudice

Can the typical person overcome his or her prejudices?  Or are stereotypes about gender, race religion, etc. so ingrained that they become part of one's subconscious?

Prejudice is some king of position or opinion. It might be strong, but changeable once one get to know the unusual, as prejudice is based on generalizations. In order to remain politically correct and not offend anyone I'll use a metaphor- Let's say that you believe that all the dogs bite, one you'll get to know a nice and playful dog you might change your opinion about dogs, now that you know the unusual.

Prejudices are not in our nature but it's nurtured as part of our education or socialization processes.

I am pretty sure it is possible but it is extremely hard, because all of our thought is based on prior experience. Even if we have a good experience we interpret it through tools that were based in the past. If we look at the dog analogy that Albert gave we can also claim the opposite and say that any playful dog is the unusual case and all other dogs should be feared.

The reason is that prejudice is based on our thinking “building blokes” and there for they are hard to break and hard to change. We can use laws of logic ob human thinking because our thought process is not purely logic – but it served us well enough for our survival.
