DESIGN SQUAD at Maker Faire PVC Pipe...

http://www.pbs.org/designsquad DESIGN SQUAD Host Nate Ball and contestant Deysi Melgar are at Maker Faire 2007 in Austin, Texas, looking for the most creative engineering and coolest inventions they can find. Maker Faire is a "two-day, family-friendly event that celebrates arts, crafts, engineering, science projects and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset." The "Pipe Dream" organ uses PVC pipes and electrically generated sound waves to pump out some serious sound. Nate and Deysi talk with maker Craig Newswanger about how this inventive instrument works. Borrowing from the hugely popular reality competition format, DESIGN SQUAD is aimed at kids and people of all ages who like reality or how-to television. Its goal is to get viewers excited about engineering! Over 13 episodes, eight high school contestants tackle engineering challenges for an actual client—from building a machine that makes pancakes to a "summer sled" for LL Bean. In the final episode, the top two scorers battle for the Grand Prize—a $10,000 college scholarship from the Intel® Foundation. Check your local listings to find out when you can watch DESIGN SQUAD on your local PBS station. For more about DESIGN SQUAD, check out the official website at http://www.pbs.org/designsquad

Simon Belmont on Casavant Pipe Organ

I had the privilege of playing a Casavant pipe organ at a local church. I messed up a couple of times because I was excited and nervous. On the Great manual, I used a chorus of Diapasons (or Montre) at 8', 4' and 2' and a Fourniture IV. I threw in a Cromorne on the Swell and coupled it to the Great. On the Pedal, I used a Diapason 16' Mixture, and Bombarde. The organ was so loud that I disturbed people next door who were filming! At the end of the video, the organist was asking me to stop playing because it was so loud. That is why someone asked me to stop at the end of the video. The organist needed to leave also. I want one of these!!! We desperately need to scrap our fake-sounding Allen and either build a hybrid pipe organ with a new Allen console or get a real pipe organ with tracker action. This thing sounded sooooooo awesome!

Are you?" Campus Challenge - a month-long statewide registration drive competition between colleges and universities throughout the state. We happened to catch Morgan in action with a few students who couldn't resist showing their support as registered organ/tissue donors in Illinois! ___________________________________ The Donate Life Illinois campaign is an 18-month effort to register 3.5 million Illinois residents as lifesaving organ/tissue donors in the state's new first-person consent registry by April 2008. Remember, you need to RE-REGISTER post Jan. 1, 2006 in Illinois to ensure your wishes as a donor. Signing the back of your driver's license is no longer adequate to ensure these wishes are honored.
