Options of trying to cut ones dosage down

I have been on xanax 1.5 mg at bedtime for approximately 10 years and due to their being high theft items and i have had them constantly stolen and the area around Kingsport Tennessee and Big Stone Gap Virginia being such an area of high drug usage that last time it was stolen i could not get but a few pills at the hospital E.R. and my doctor does not write scripts without seeing me first so here i am on vacation panicking and sending my mother from a panic attack to a GI bleed as i was so distressed that it ruined our whole trip and having medication stolen, having to file a police report. My mother told me that she takes trazadone for replacement of xanax but this stuff is nasty as i got script from Doctor for 300 mg which i have cut myself down to 225 mg and a half of a xanax every other night, and then in between take my happy pills of 1.5 mg xanax. The point being i am not depressed and it is classified as an anti depressant, what is the category of xanax? is it not a benzodiazepine? What could replace it and help one get off other than Librium or would the best bet be Librium?

Happy Valentine's. Play us a rose, you're organic, man.

Victims of circumstance owe it to fate. Victims of choice owe it to themselves.

Talk to your doc about a benzo with a short half-life. Librium does not fall into this category.

Older antihistamines are quite sedating and might serve if you require sedation at bedtime.

And Catherine- I do not understand how it is that you get your Xanax stolen so frequently. How does this happen? Can you not keep it safe? Can you keep it on your person?

Trazadone is a tricyclic anti-depressant, but is used for sleep because it is so sedating.  I have not seen Trazadone used to treat depression in years, but, again only used for a sleep agent.  Secondly, I would not try to wean myself off Xanax without the supervision of a physician as you can suffer seizures from withdrawl.  Third, you sound like you are managing your own medications.  You are on a large dose of Xanax and taking your mother's Trazadone, I would be very reluctant to refill your medications without seeing you. Your behavior of self medicating and naming what medications you want are frequently labeled as drug seeking behavior and I am wondering if your physician is not suspect and he/she thinks you are drug seeking.  Additionally, that is why ER's won't give you but a few of the Xanax when they give you a prescription.

I would  consider doing a drug washout (not an abrupt stopping) on all your medications and re-evaluating you once you have been off all your meds.

Lastly, since you are on the class of medications benzodiazapines, anti-histamines would not have any efficacy on you for sedation.

Whoever told you that xanax was considered an antidepressant and not a benzodiazepine is totally incorrect.  Xanax is considered a narcotic.  It is a triplikit prescription.  It is in the schedule II class of drugs which means it is highly addictive.  Xanax is only good if it is not abused.  However, most people who take xanax do abuse it to some degree.  Your mother who takes Trazadone is better than xanax because Tradone is not addicting.  Ask your doctor to prescribe only 100 mg. of Trazadone rather than the 300mg.  Whenever a drug has a dose of .25, 1.5, 2. it is very powerful.  The smaller the miligrams on drugs they are the most powerful ones.  It stands to reason why your xanax is being stolen.  However, I would be more careful with it in the future and also continue to take it only as prescribed.
