Opening and shutting fireplace damper

How to figure out if fireplace damper open or shut.  We have a big steel thing hanging down inside fireplace.  It can be pushed back and put into a locked position or be pulled forward.  We get smoke either way so we assume there is a clogged flue.  We still want to know which way is open or closed.  Also this may be a fireplace insert, it has it's own chimney that looks like a woodburning stove outside on the roof of house.

The "general" answer is it's most likely in the OPEN position when you push (which pushes the damper up) & lock. Pulling would bring the damper back down in the CLOSED position.

One way to be sure is take a flashlight and look [preferably with no fire Laughing ]

Open refers to smoke being able to access the chimney. When the big metal thingy is occluding the opening into the chimney, the flue is closed.

This seems like a hard question to answer without being offensive. I am not trying to be.

I concur that there is a blockage in the chimney somewhere.

The problem is that this is not a normal chimney.  If standing outside looking at house, you see the original, main chimney coming out of the top, middle of roof.  Over to the side, there is what appears to be a woodburning stove chimney.  Standing inside the house, the fireplace looks like a normanl fireplace with mantel and blower vents on each side which makes me suspect INSERT.  Ok, now we did investigate by getting on roof.  Can't tell anything from there. Looking up chimney from inside we can't see daylight when steel handle is pushed back or pulled forward.  I wish I could draw a picture because I understand by looking at it from the outside why we would have a hard time detecting light when looking from inside.

A picture would certainly be helpful me.

I do not know if this would work. But if you have a MySpace place, you could upload some pictures there and insert the image here. The technique is to right click on the picture and left click on properties. Copy the name (location) and paste it into the appropriate box after you click on add image in the upper right hand corner of the postcomposing area.

the fastest and easiest way to check is to light a match under the flute and if blows out ,then the damper is open

Thank you everyone for replying.  Did have an experienced friend come over and check everything out.  No blockage, the flue is closed in the forward (pulled towards inside) position.  The time we got smoke inside we had closed it thinking we opened it.  Working fine now.  Thanks Again all!!!Embarassed
